Sometimes 8.1 will blue screen and restart, other times the OS hangs completely and the computer has to be powered off, and at other time vlc hangs but after shutting the app down with Task Manager the OS is so unstable that it cannot shut down and has to be powered off. I also noticed that while watching DVDs with vlc 8.1 the audio portion breaks up (stutters and crackles) but with 7.2 there are no problems. I will double check for updates for the for drivers and such. Where would I find the download for 7.2+? I started over from scratch.

I purchased a brand new ATI TV Wonder Pro, installed a fresh XP Pro and all the updates as well as DirectX 9.0C. Keeppy : ion discover dj usb dj controller for mac. If I run the 7.2 all is well except for being able to choose an input other than TV Tuner.

If I run the 8.1 all is well except when I try to stream from the DirectShow. I can stream a file no problem but when I try to stream from a capture device, I never get prompted for any details about the capture source or output size. When I check messages it says 'main error: cannot add this stream' 'main error: cannot create packetizer output' Any thoughts on this? It turns out that the problem was due to using the wizard to set up the streaming instead of doing it manually. In 7.2 the wizard takes you through all the setup screens including the one with the transcoding settings. The wizard in 8.1 misses the screen with the transcoding settings.

Once I had everthing working I wiped the system and put Win2K back on but once you start playing with the capture portion of vlc the app crashes occasionally and cannot be fully shut down so I will stay with XP (I still managed to crash it a couple of times in XP but at least I was able to completely shut vlc down and start it back up again). Thank you for your guidance and patience in helping me resolve these problems and congratulations on creating a great piece of software. Having all the different command line controls makes it easy to create shortcuts that automatically start vlc up in any mode desired without input from the user.

It also seems to be a much more powerful and practical solution than the Windows Media Encoder that I tried.
