Personally I cannot give it any stars at all. I'm sure for those who use MicroSnot OS computers this thing works. However it advertises it is Linux compatable. Maybe I didn't put enough effort into it but I've been a long time Linux/UNIX user and I cannot get the software they shipped with it to compile. I tried to compile it with the off the shelf software of Red Hat Enterprise, Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu/Puke, and several others. I filled out a CS request on the Holux OEM web page. They have not bothered to even respond.
So I purchased another make that I had before but gave to a friend who went on an emergency expedition. At the time I had it my system detected it and received data but I had not gotten the maping software working at the time on a new laptop and system. I now have the maping software and other software that works with the GPS, maping and other technical software for my work. So I'm waiting on this one for a full evaluation. I would never reccomend the Holux GR-213U for Linux use.
Maybe for MicroSnot but I'll never now. I have absolutely no use for Bill Gate's junky, almost usless OS. This is a great GPS, easy to hook up, and is NEMA 183 compatible. As A full time cruiser, it is important to always have an accurate position for my boat.
Holux M 215+ Driver
I bought a Holux GR-213U as a backup for my chartplotter. By hooking it up to my computer, I have a NEMA 183 GPS that provides my position to several different software packages on it. The Holux GR-213 is very compact, fits nicely in a port light where it always provides my position, and with its USB cable is easy to hook up to my laptop.
All it needs is the USB cable (i.e. No power, signal cables, etc.). I have enough confidence in this GPS that I have recommended it to many other people. At least 3 of them have purchased one.
They love it too.

Go to the Holux support website at: NOTE: All quote marks are added by me for emphasis only. Under the 'Select products Catagory' dropdown choose 'GPS Receiver/Data Logger'. Under the 'Select products series' dropdown choose 'Mouse Type GPS Receiver' and click on Submit. A new page opens showing various receivers. Scroll down to the GR-213u GPS Receiver and see the one called 'GR-213u Driver Program-Vista Driver'. It is of a type of file compression called 'rar' which may require a unzip program.
Holux Gps Driver
I use a free program, 'Secure Zip for Windows'. Click on the little yellow box at the far right of the 'GR-213u Driver Program-Vista Driver' line. It will be labeled '9618869.rar'. Save the file. It should be found by clicking on the Vista START and then your user name & should be in the 'Downloads' folder as '9618869.rar'.
Creat a new folder for the actual unzipped file by clicking on the the Vista START Icon & then 'Documents'. Click on the 'Organize' tab & then on the dropdown 'New Folder'. Name the new folder 'Holux Vista Drvr' & then open it. Now back at the 'Downloads' folder open (Unzip) the '9618869.rar' file.
Copy the new folder 'GR-213u Driver Program-Vista Driver' to the 'Holux Vista Drvr' folder you created in 'Documents', so that you can later delete all those files that may have built up in 'Downloads'folder from doing lots of downloading. Open the 'GR-213u Driver Program-Vista Driver' folder & see the setup file 'PL2303ProlificVista3301.exe'. The size should be about 2724 KB. Open it to start the driver install. Now you are almost done. After Vista has done its driver install, go to 'Control Panel' & open 'Device Manager'.
Now plug in your Holux GR-213 & the 'Device Manager' should now show a new entry called 'Ports (COM & LPT). Click on the little + sign to expand it & you should see 'Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM#)'. The # represents your Comm Port number used by the Holux. Right click on 'Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM#)' & click on the dropdown 'Properties'. Click on the tab 'Port Settings'at the top of the 'Properties' window.
Change the value in 'Bits per second' from 9600 to 4800 & click OK. Hopefully you have installed the Holux Utility 'GPS Viewer' with a shortcut on the desktop. Open the 'GPS Viewer' & click on 'Scan'.
A new window 'GPS Scanning' opens showing GPS found at the same Comm Port # that shows in the 'Device Manager'. Click on OK & the scan window closes now showing the same Comm Port#. Click on 'Open GPS' & then on 'Cold Start or Warm Start' & all the satellites found should show up. You can close the 'GPS Viewer' & all the other open windows. If all went as described any software you used with Win XP using GPS should work OK now with Vista.
Now run your software (MS S&T or whatever) & make sure its GPS Settings show the same Comm Port# as in 'GPS Viewer' & baud rate of 4800. Answered on May 09, 2009.
