Amazon Elgato Eyetv Hybrid Tv Tuner For Mac

Basic cable from Comcast and internet at $72 a month was too much for us so we invested in a Mohu antenna and this little USB device. I read most of the reviews and it seems every product has those who dislike it. Frankly, those are the ones I read.

As it turned out the first Elgato I received was made in 2006, according to the CD software that came with it. It didn't work at all, but Elgato, through Amazon, immediately returned my money and said keep it.

Why not, it doesn't work. One review I read said it worked for a month and then stopped. Those are the ones that concern me, but in the context of Comcast I tried again. As others have written, installation is easy.

My only issue was positioning the Mohu antenna, but I finally got it right it and I really think some stations come in better than they did with Comcast. The Elgato EyeTV Hybrid TV is pretty simple if I can use it (cell phones drive me crazy) and in no time I was making recording schedules for while we were away house-pet sitting, but after a week it stopped.

I removed the device from one usb port and tried it in another and it came back to life. (BTW, mine gets very hot) It has worked fine since. (I got mine from Amazon in July) My wife tossed the box so I hope it keeps working.

Others, far more sophisticated than me, have delved into its functions. I am just happy to watch our local channels, record when we are away and even edit parts of recordings to H264 files. My only concern is for it to keep working the way it is now. I was surprised to see that even if my computer is off it will turn itself on to record a scheduled program. If only it turned itself off afterwards that would be perfect, but I have no complaints and thus the 5 star rating. I will rate this item first for the Eye TV software and then for the Hybrid device.

The Software is very good and works intuitively. It takes about ten seconds to figure any one process out. For those who never want to miss a specific program (for example I like The Big Bang Theory) it records and stores TV programs, once set up, without hassle. It will convert recorded programs to formats that one would need for their paritcular set-up (iPad for instance) and will record live programs allowing the viewer to skip back, to catch that particular phrase, or forward, through the commercial you have already seen twenty times. The software gets four out of five stars. The Hybrid device is a bit of a disappointment.

It does convert digital or analog signals and send them to a computer as described but, it does not do a good job with HD signals. HD signals are often pixilated and recorded so that the prgram skips continually. It does not do this all the time, but when it does, the program is not watchable. I give the device two out of five stars.

I am transitioning away from cable TV thanks to this thing. The USB Tuner stick works great. I got two so I could record two shows at once and all seems to be working fine. I am lucky to have a clear path to the local TV towers so a $3 bow-tie antenna gets all the networks with great signal. The EyeTV software is pretty good. I have some minor gripes with it but it's much better than what I was locked into from Verizon. I did get a because I was planning to keep cable and just dump their DVR.

In the end I was so happy with this product I made the leap and returned the HD DVR. Streaming recorded shows and live TV to iphone/ipad is neat but I'm not planning to use it much.

Same goes for sharing recordings to other computers. I don't like the remote it's cheap and I couldn't figure the buttons out for some critical functions. I use a Bluetooth keyboard and trackpad and I'm happy with that. That leads to my biggest gripe. There's an on-screen menu that's like what you get from regular DVRs and it's clearly designed for navigating from the remote. The main application screen is more like iTunes so it's easier to navigate with a keyboard and shows a ton more information.

Unfortunately you can't change the font of the main application screen. From 11' on a 56' TV I can almost read it but not quite. I've learned to use Mac OS's screen zoom feature and that works well enough so that I don't need the on-screen menu. In all I'm happy and these things are going to pay for themselves inside a year since I'm dropping FIOS TV. I have a mac mini connected to an LED TV and purchased this device both for DVR capabilities and to convert my old VHS tapes to digital. I've used it for both and have been extremely pleased. My only struggle has been with the program guide because the clear QAM channels keep disappearing, and if the channels are not showing up in the guide then the show is not recorded.

This could be an issue with me being such a novice with this technology. I was extremely pleased with the technical support from Elgato-I received an email response within 24 hours for my questions.

I love how easy it is to connect, record, and export to many different types of media. The picture is beautiful, the editing is simple to use. I've converted several old VHS tapes to digital and it is really cool to be able to create DVDs and play these old movies on my ipod.

Well worth the money spent. I must also add that I'm impressed with Amazon.

I had originally purchased the HD model but realized once I received it I needed the hybrid for the coax connection. There was no trouble returning the HD and receiving a refund, even though I had opened the box. I really enjoy having the Elgato EyeTV Hybrid! I use my iMac to watch broadcast TV. It works well with the iMac and comes with a one year subscription to the company's TV guide. The set up was pretty easy. I have not used the DVR feature yet so I cannot say how well it works.

I did difficulty with the remote right after setting it up and sent a note via the Elgato site and got an answer a couple days later. The remote needs to have line of sight contact with the Hybrid TV tuner.

I had the Hybrid tuner up behind the iMac so of course the remote wouldn't work. All in all I think it was a great buy. I have to say. The device works as explained. I only have two issues: (1) The need for a software upgrade for Apple's Mountain Lion is necessary. The EyeTV does not like the new software upgrade for Apple. (2) The Guide does not work as well as Microsoft Media Center's guide.

Unless I am doing something wrong, it is challenging to view schedules past 24hrs. Also, recording a series (first run) is hard to manipulate (if I am doing something wrong). The clarity and product works great. I am awaiting the software upgrade soon as promised by Elgato.
